Stephen Lawrence Day – 22 April 2026
Stephen Lawrence Day is a time where we can honour Stephen’s life by working to be the best we can in our communities.
Stephen’s tragic death ignited a national conversation about racial equality and the need to tackle systemic racism, affecting Black and other marginalised groups in the UK.
In 1993 Stephen was attacked and killed in a racist and unprovoked assault while waiting for a bus with his friend. His family have pushed tirelessly for justice.
Public pressure led to the Macpherson Inquiry which exposed institutional racism within the Metropolitan Police, making 70 recommendations. A major outcome was changing the double jeopardy law which allowed for two of Stephen’s killers to be convicted in 2012, though others have never been brought to justice.
Stephen’s murder highlighted wider racial violence in the 1990s and brought attention to earlier cases in the Black community. The report pushed for more changes in the UK to confront systemic racism in areas such as healthcare, education and the justice system. Issues remain however as Black people still face disproportionate stop and search rates and high levels of racially aggravated crime. Trust between Black communities and institutions remains strained and police forces do not represent the diversity of the communities they serve. Stephen’s legacy encourages us to keep fighting for fairness, equality and a society that is free from racism.
Each year on the 22 April, the anniversary of Stephen Lawrence’s death, the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation remembers Stephen and honour his legacy.
The Foundation focuses on empowering young people through the 3 C’s –
· Classrooms – inspiring children to dream and value education
· Communities – helping young people make connections in the community
· Careers – support the access to opportunities for marginalised young people
